Askew for Palm OS devices

Ok. If you can answer 'yes' to the following questions:

I have a Palm Pilot.
I have a MIDI interface for my Palm Pilot.
I have an Ensoniq Synthesizer ESQ-1 or ESQ-M.
I am interested in generating new sounds for it.
Then I want you to email me and tell me where you've been all my life. Seriously, I think this application is useful for four, five people tops. Right now, that is. Soon, when the world realizes the usefulness of a Palm and a good MIDI interface for said Palm, and also the true genius of the ESQ synthesizer design, then they will learn, oh will they ever. (So I don't feel bad later... umm... Askew costs $2,400 postage paid.) (No, it's really free.)

Askew is the brainchild of a wicked stepchild of Jack Tramiel of Atari fame. We were in his garage staring at proofs of the original Atari 520ST ads.. you know, the ones with the sports car with the ST on top -- "Power Without the Price." Benny pointed out some 'discrepancies' between shots, it was insane: adjacent photos timestamped minutes apart had the shadow (it was an outdoor shoot!) cautiously polar*. We checked our '85 almanacs and were still disturbed. Instead of fretting, we just got our ESQs out and decided to make some new sounds for it. Random numbers worked then, and work now.

Askew also generates random 6-letter names for your random patches. The version you would download from this site uses a silly algorithm, but a better one is in the pipe.

Please let us know if this works. I think it works. Well, I got different sounds to come out of it.

If you are an ESQ-monster, please shut the closet door at night. You are scaring the children.

Askew was ported by Brian Whitman/CSV from gcc source by the ever talented Noah Vawter and uses the excellent PilotMag for an IDE and gcc for the compiler.

You also need to check out Handheld-music. There's lots of stuff happening.
